Improving guest safety with medical innovation

SleepAngel team will participate in Cruise Ship Hospitality Expo Europe, to present PneumaPure filtered bedding - comfortable and sustainable bedding solution improving safety for guests and housekeeping.

Here you can find an introductory interview with our CEO Sven Jürisoo by Elliot Preece, to give an overview on why soft surfaces need more focus.

Thanks for joining us today! Can you tell us a little bit about SleepAngel and your ethos as a company?

We believe everybody should sleep Where the Air is Pure. The background behind this slogan is that up until now, hazards from contaminated bedding (pillows, mattresses, etc.) and exposure to allergens and pathogens have not been recognised.

The technological background of SleepAngel’s bedding product is in medical, where this problem is getting more attention as Healthcare Acquired Infections are further recognised as a source of cost and damage. In hospitality and other multiple-user bedding environments, there has not been much discussion of infection transmission pre-COVID-19. The reality is, that pillows – and bedding overall – are the often overlooked source of contamination as not just allergens and bed bugs, but also superbugs, viruses, mould and pathogens can enter regular bedding products through stitching holes and zips, where they flourish and multiply due to perfect (moist, warm) conditions. In addition, approximately 2 litres of humid air contaminated with microorganisms carried in droplet suspension are aerosolised into the environment, every time a person’s head is placed on the pillow. So the bedding acts both as a reservoir, but also exposes each new bedding user with whatever previous users have left behind. Just changing the covers is not enough, very often even washing the bedding is not enough. The solution is a CE marked barrier bedding, that is an effective barrier against viruses, pathogens, bedbugs, dust mites, but also to humidity and (body) liquids.

The inventors of the technology are David Woolfson and Dr. Duncan Bain. Gabriel Scientific – the parent company of SleepAngel – is founded around innovative technologies in the area of sleep science.

How can your products ensure the health of the people who use them?

Sleep is the best thing you can do to improve your physical and mental health. As we step into post-COVID-19 or living with the virus society, the keyword next to comfort is also “clean”. Achieving an as-new sleeping environment in multi-use beds is difficult, as bedding breathes the same as we do and would require thorough washing and vacuuming, that is neither sustainable nor 100% achievable.

SleepAngel’s product line includes various bedding products – pillows, duvets, toppers, mattresses

SleepAngel bedding is a combination of innovations and comes with a “built in mask”, the PneumaPure filter. This ensures that bedding products stay clean and as new – the cover, welded seams and ventilating PneumaPure filter are all an effective barrier to allergens, pathogens, viruses and liquids, and it assures that allergens, pathogens, viruses and dust mites stay on the cover of the product, where they can be removed according to cleaning procedures. This means there is no need to transport bedding to laundry or beat dust out of them – just change the cover and it’s ready for the next customer. This means that bedding is safe for all, even for people with dust mite allergies and asthma.

Why do the cruise lines need your products?

Cruise lines operate in a very demanding area with utmost demands for hygiene. SleepAngel barrier bedding changes the cleaning procedures fundamentally – secured customer comfort, healthy and clean environment, while also adding another controllable variable to the equation to secure overall hygiene standards on the vessel...
